Colton Taylor 01/11 Blog post

From the Eileen Myles poem's today, I think the one I was most interested in today had to be Vulcan. I felt a deeper connection to Myles of having that idea of making your own little planet as a child, and becoming some famous scientist one day. I loved her use of detail and I plan to use that in my own story. She paints a lot of pictures and really captivates the audience by painting a picture in their head with it. I also liked and disliked how she digressed from what she started speaking about. I wanted to hear the rest of what she said about the solar system, but it felt very natural for her to digress, so I hope to have a few elements of this in my story, without digressing too much from what I am actually writing about. Her use of metaphors throughout the piece was also very intriguing and I hope to replicate that with lines such as, the sea is like the sun, but wet. My idea for a story was an idea I had back in 7th grade that I have slowly formulated out in my head for years. It revolves around a boy who is being pursued by two warring factions that want to use him to save in one group’s case, and the other is trying to use his power to enslave the human race. I hope to use as much detail as Myles so that I can paint a picture for my readers.

  1. Sounds interesting! I agree that Myles' description of her childhood dreams was nice, and everyone can relate to that. A few of the Myles poems did go off track like you said, but most of them tied things together mid-way or by the end to show the connection of the different parts of the poem. I think the fact that you thought of this story in 7th grade, didn't do much with it, and are now going to develop it is interesting. Maybe you could compare your 7th grade thoughts to now, but just telling the story straight-forwardly would be cool too.

  2. Very cool idea for a story. I think you could relate the approach Myles takes with Vulcan to connect yourself in seventh grade to how you are now, and the boy's thoughts from then to now. I also wanted to hear the rest of the solar system from her point of view. The description of Earth was so dynamic that it made me want to hear about the other planets. I think your idea will be very interesting to hear about and develop.
