Maddy Dattilo 1/11

My idea is to write about my experiences with church and religion as a child, focusing on the rituals that surrounded those things.  I will use my experiences in this realm to show what is ultimately important to me as a child.  The poem I anticipate drawing the most inspiration from is "Aunt Ann".  I loved the way she included really personal details, but also seemed to be making general statements about humanity.  That transition from the personal and specific to the general is very effective for me.  I also love how the poem comes from the perspective of a child, and there is a strong focus on family.  I plan to include both of these elements, to a degree, in my story, particularly the focus on family. Another method of Eileen Myles' that stuck out to me was in "Vulcan", where she uses a kind of structured rambling, stream of consciousness way of telling.  This brings the reader in, exposing the inner workings of the author's mind.  My story will be personal and this is another one of the methods I will employ to convey that.

  1. I too grew up in the church as a child and so I’m interested to hear your point of view. The transition from personal to general is an excellent idea and I think it will work well for what you are trying to accomplish. I also like your structured rambling approach and agree that it will definitely make your story more personal. You may want to consider adding snippets from religious text or songs. These could serve as details to describe your setting/surroundings and/or if they held a special meaning to you they could also make your story more personal.

  2. I think your concept of speaking about how religion has affected you from the point of view of yourself as a child is really interesting. I am also very excited to see how you will go from specific to general while also incorporating using stream of consciousness like Myles did in Vulcan. I think it’ll work to make a really compelling piece that will be fascinating to hear. I am not sure how you plan on incorporating all of these things, but I think you have a really great concept so I am anxious to listen to your story and hear all of this combined.

  3. I grew up in the church as well, so I'm definitely interested to hear how your experience affected you as a child - specifically the "rituals" you mention. I also like Myles' transition from the specific to the broad and her focus on themes of childhood and family, which are definitely relevant to the overarching theme of growing up in the church. I'm not sure where exactly you plan to start, but it could be helpful to pick a very specific moment or even object you remember from your experience and expand from there. Can't wait to hear it!
